Help prevent polar bear extinction through critical research and conservation efforts.
Polar Bears are native to several regions of the Artic - including Alaska, Canada, Russia and Norway. They are currently listed as a threatened species in the United States under the Endangered Species Act. Rapid destruction of the polar bear's habitat is the main culprit! These majestic creatures rely on interconnected polar ice caps to roam from one area to the other. Sadly, this sea ice is rapidly diminishing. Loss of sea ice coupled with a decrease in seal population has pushed polar bears to the brink of extinction in areas where they once thrived. Harsh and unique climates have prevented researchers from conducting effective polar bear studies. Without protection, polar bears could disappear entirely by the end of the century.
GreaterGood.org is working to help protect polar bears through conservation of their habitats as well as research. More studies are needed to understand the true effects of increased commercial use of the fragile Artic ecosystem, as well as disease and pollution. With increased knowledge, research can assist in identifying habitats to protect, as the polar bear is completely reliant on this specialized living environment. By increasing the areas that are protected, polar bears will have larger spaces for denning and raising their cubs.
You can help. Your donation will go toward research and the conservation of diminishing polar bear habitat. It is imperative to protect polar bear habitat now before it's too late.
