Hurricane Irma smashed into the Caribbean on Wednesday, September 6th. It is the most powerful Atlantic Ocean hurricane ever recorded. Classified as a Category 5 storm, the 185-mph winds are flooding homes and streets, yanking trees and electric lines from the ground, and shaking the chain of small islands to their core. Irma is now on a path toward Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas and South Florida. The U.S. has declared a state of emergency for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the states of Florida and South Carolina. Mandatory evacuations are taking place in many areas.
